Chandos Lake Sailing

By Paul Walkovich

The wind in your hair, the warm sun on your skin and a gentle spray on your face - at one with the wind and water – sailing – what a great way to feel connected to the lake.  Now join with others who also enjoy sailing and you have – the Chandos Lake Sailing Club!

Our club consists of members with a wide range of age, ability and experience.  We organize our own informal races with five per summer and they are open to all sailors on the lake.  No commitment - you can come out for just one race if you’d like.

We have two course locations (Main Lake and West Bay) and three classes (Catamaran, Sloop and Sailboard).  Races start at 1:30 PM and last about an hour.  Check in with the committee boat 10 minutes before the race for instructions and you’re all set to go.  Immediately following the race we then gather for a social to present awards, share tips, strategy and stories over refreshments.  Our schedule for 2018 is:

Race 1

Sat. June 30

1:30 pm

Main Lake

Gilbert Cottage, Lot CLE70

Race 2

Sat. July 14

Race 5

There is no charge for attending the races however we do request contributions to cover our costs for awards, equipment and socials.  Being a member also allows sailors to accumulate points for the Series Championship.  Our fees for sailors for 2018 are $25 per season, or $7 per race.  Family and friends are welcome to attend socials at $15 per season, or $5 per social.  Many thanks to our treasurer Dawn Macklin for keeping our finances in great shape.

We’d like to meet you – even if you haven’t sailed before or don’t have a boat.  It’s a great way learn about sailing and to meet fellow cottagers from around the lake.  Please contact Sue Walkovich ( or 416-571-3282) to register as sailor or crew, or to even be part of the race committee.

I’d also like to thank our past commodore, Art Parker, and his wife Joy for their many years of leadership and support of the sailing club.  Art and Joy, even though not sailors themselves, fully embraced the sailing club and we are thankful for their contribution to lead the club, run races, and host the club barbeques.

See you on the water!
